The Flemington-Raritan School District will provide its K-8 students with more fresh fruits and vegetables in the cafeterias of its six schools when classes begin on Wednesday, September 3. The District, through its Wellness Committee, has worked with its food service provider, Maschio’s Food Services, to ensure students have access to healthier food choices. Under the new agreement, students will only be served fresh fruit and fresh or frozen vegetables; only beans/legumes will be from a can.

Additional changes include:
     - New Jersey local fresh fruits when possible;
     - Artificial coloring or sweeteners will not be in any food sold in the cafeteria;
     - Flavored milk will not be sold in the breakfast program;
     - Organic salads will be offered as entrée alternatives.
Snacks will not be sold to kindergarten and first-grade students. Ice cream will be sold once a week for students in grades two through four.  Desserts will be sold during the last ten minutes of each lunch period for grades two through six.  There are no restrictions on snack sales for seventh- and eighth-grade students, however all snacks will be healthier choices this year. According to Maschio’s Corporate Registered Dietitian, all snack items will meet the new USDA Smart Snack guidelines placed into effect July 1, 2014.
The Flemington-Raritan School District Wellness Committee worked with members of the school board, administrators, and representatives from Maschio’s Food Services – incorporating recommendations from the District’s schools and parents as well – to develop the new, fresher, healthier menu guidelines. Maschio’s will continue to offer “food tastings” district-wide, that highlight fruits, vegetables and legumes. Foods that are well received and that students really seem to like will be incorporated into the menus.
