Welcome to Fabulous Fifth Grade!

Summer has certainly flown by! I hope you and your family had a fantastic vacation, and you are ready for an exciting year in fifth grade. By now, you know if you are in homeroom 413 with Ms. Deneka or 411 with me! Mrs. Deneka will be teaching Math and Science this year, and I will be teaching Language Arts and Social Studies. I am sad that we can't meet in our classroom on the first day of school, but I look forward to meeting you on Zoom and getting to know all of you until we can go back to RFIS! I am so excited to begin the school year and embark on our learning explorations together!

Here is just a little glimpse into your fifth grade experience. You will continue to build a strong number sense in Math, and you will spend a lot of time working with fractions and problem solving. In Social Studies, we will explore American history. We will begin with a study of the first inhabitants of our continent and travel through history up to the Revolutionary War. In Science, we will learn about exciting topics such as ecosystems and electricity through hands-on activities and investigations. In Language Arts, we will start the year by exploring the different worlds of Fiction!  Later in the year, we will venture into nonfiction books. We will also be learning how to live like real writers by keeping our very own writer's notebook (virtual/hard copy)!   

Please be sure to have an independent book picked out by the first week of school! It would be helpful to have a Fiction book to read as we tackle the Fiction genre and learn helpful strategies!
