The Mckinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act

The Mckinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act (42 U.S.C 11431) is a federal law that protects students experiencing homelessness and their families ensuring immediate enrollment and educational stability for displaced children and youth
The Mckinney Vento Act ensures that students receive support in obtaining anything needed for their education including:
- hygiene items
- clothing
- educational and medical resources
The Mckinney Vento Act defines homeless children and youth as any student who lacks a “fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence”
This includes students who are sharing the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason: living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to lack of adequate alternative accommodations like
- Living in emergency shelters
- Transitional housing
- Living in cars
- Campgrounds
- Bus stations
