Copper MiningCopper mining in Flemington was like the Gold Rush in the Wild West. People got very excited about the thought of getting rich quickly. The first copper found in Hunterdon County was on a farm south of Flemington. Copper fever started to spread with Hugh Capner. He found copper while digging a foundation for a new house on his farm near Mine Brook. He sold his property to Flemington Copper Company in 1836.Several other mining companies were started and later were sold to Hunterdon Mining Company. Small pockets of copper were found and sold. The idea of getting rich quickly by finding large amounts of copper soon became only a dream. Hunterdon Mining Company was forced to close.Names like Mine Street and Copper Hill are reminders of the copper industry in Flemington long ago.
