With the implementation of the Common Core Learning Standards, the district adopted the Math Expressions resources for grades K-2. Math Expressions is a comprehensive, standards-based resource that offers a balanced approach to teaching and learning mathematics. Math Expressions uses manipulatives, visual models, conceptual language, and real-world situations to help students build deep mathematical understanding.
What it looks like:
Every morning, kindergarten through second grade classes start with student-led math-based routines about the calendar, money, counting, time, charts, etc. Later in the day, the math lesson kicks off with a quick group activity, followed by a teacher-led activity where students participate in the lesson. While teachers introduce skills and algorithms, they also foster a discussion about different ways to find answers using conceptual math language. Students explore creative solutions for real world situations through modeling and math manipulatives. Teachers use visual guides to help students conceptualize what they learn and students practice new skills in pairs, small groups, or individually using math journals and interactive digital resources.
