    Welcome to 5th Grade!

    Dear 5th Grader and Family,

Welcome back to school and to your first year at RFISl!  We hope you’ve had a fun and relaxing summer.  We both certainly did!  This year promises to be lots of fun!  Although it is still not a typical year of school, we will be sure to fill it with all kinds of exciting learning experiences in Social Studies, Science, Math, and Language Arts.

We will have many hands-on experiences throughout the year that will challenge you to comprehend and analyze various concepts.  You will conduct independent research activities and design presentations with your peers to teach each other about topics in all different subjects. You will explore real life situations and scenarios in which we will develop our skills to problem solve, think critically, and explore to better understand what we are learning.  You will design and maintain notebooks in which you will analyze all of your new information and delve deeper into your thinking.  You will work independently, with partners, in groups, and as a whole class as much as we are able to safely.  And we, as your teachers, will be there by your side helping you all along the way so that we can all have the greatest experiences and most success that we can in 5th grade!

We can’t wait to begin the 2021-2022 school year with you.  Mrs. Casal will be your Social Studies and Math teacher.  Ms. Culcasi will be your Science and Language Arts teacher.  There are a few things we would like you to bring in on the first day of school.  Firstly, make sure you take a look at the 5th grade supply list so you are prepared with each of those items.  In addition to these, you will need a 1 1/2” binder.  Secondly, remember to bring in any notes you have from your summer reading.  Please also bring in a different text you plan to read or have recently started.  We will have independent reading time almost every day and want you to be prepared for it.  Finally, you may bring a healthy, peanut-free snack for the morning.  You can check out the attached checklist to help you be organized for the first day of school.  Please have a parent or guardian fill out the survey so we can learn more about you before your arrival. This is located on our school websites.

This is bound to be a great year for all of us, and we couldn’t be more excited about it! With hard work, dedication, and lots of fun, we know this will be a successful year for all of us.  We hope you had a great first day and are ready for an action-packed year in fifth grade.

    Mrs. Casal
